They say if something isn’t broken, you shouldn’t fix it. I routinely fail to follow this advice, particularly with respect to hair and beauty products. Here’s what happens. I find a product I love, use it for a while, then decide to try something else. Eventually I come back to the beloved product and start the cycle again.

My latest circle of experimentation has closed around Davines OI All In One Milk. Since I’ve recently been reintroduced to this amazing product, I was inspired to spotlight the unique brand behind it.

Below is an introduction to Davines, the sustainable hair care brand that should be on everyone’s radar.

What’s Davines?

Davines is a family-owned hair care brand with a decades-long history of doing things differently. The company now known as The Davines Group started in a basement, the product of a husband-wife team living in Parma, Italy. Wife Silvana concocted the formulas while husband Gianni drove around Italy selling product to wholesalers out of his van.

The company found success developing custom formulas for third parties and selling product under its own name. One of its early branded hits was Oil non Oil, an organic serum with protective and strengthening powers.

No doubt that’s a predecessor to the current Davines product This is an Oil not Oil. If you want a good chuckle, read the reviews on that one. Users love the lightweight formula but don’t understand why or how it doesn’t get greasy like other hair oils.

Product line

Today the Davines brand has a full line-up of hair care products, ranging from shampoos to heat protecting shields. There are enough products that shopping the Davines store online could possibly be overwhelming — if not for the products being nicely organized by hair type.

Ladies with fine, thin hair have some interesting options. Since I’m in that category, I have these on my list to try:

  • Liquid Spell bodifying, fortifying fluid
  • This is a Texturizing Dust
  • VOLU Shampoo Bar
  • REPLUMPING Hair Filler Superactive Leave-In

Thick-haired women will lean into the LOVE hair smoother and the MOMO shampoo and conditioner.

Davines also has formulas for dry hair, gray hair, hair loss, sensitive scalps, and dandruff.

If you’re not sure what you need, take the quick hair quiz at Davines.com. The quiz will recommend products that address your main hair concerns.

Sustainability focus

The Davines Group is a certified B corporation. B corporations are for-profit companies that adhere to higher standards of sustainability and social responsibility. They must pass a rigorous assessment and then re-certify every two years. According to B Lab, there are only about 6,000 certified B corps around the world.

Davines publishes a sustainability report annually which outlines its progress on key initiatives. Some highlights are:

  • 82.7% of product ingredients are naturally derived
  • 78.3% of product ingredients are rapidly biodegradable
  • The company’s headquarters, branch offices, and production plant in Parma have been carbon neutral since 2018
  • 42 acres of land is dedicated to experimenting with new farming practices, in partnership with Rodale Institute

Where to get Davines

You can buy Davines products at Davines.com, Amazon, and Walmart.com. Your salon may have it too.

Hair care subscriptions

The Davines website does support haircare subscriptions, so you never run out of essential products. Subscribers get free shipping. (Without a subscription, shipping is free when you order $75 or more). As a subscriber, you also reduce carbon emissions by bundling your products into one shipment. You can change or update your subscription anytime.

Lastly, I’ll leave you with some notes on my experience with Davines OI All In One Milk. A stylist introduced me to this product when I lived in St. Louis. It’s part of Davines’ best-selling OI collection, which is infused with Roucou oil.

Roucou oil comes from the achiote fruit and is rich in beta-carotene. The oil contributes to healthier hair and less frizz.

All In One Milk is a lightweight hair oil that controls frizz, protects hair from heat, and softens strands. I love a multifunction product and this one does not disappoint. I have fine, thin hair that’s prone to fly-aways — so a soft, smooth, shiny hairdo is only possible with the right product.

A few sprays of All In One Milk and I can give myself the most amazing blowout with a round brush. It leaves a wonderful scent behind, plus a hold that’s light and touchable.

OI All In One Milk retails at Davines.com for $40. You can use Klarna to split that up into interest-free payments.

Haircare brand that does more

I used Davines for some time before I knew the brand story. The product I’ve used from the line-up is topnotch, and the family history and sustainability focus make this brand even more likable. If you’re in the market for a new haircare product, give Davines a try and let me know what you think.
