This sunny stretch of beach on Mexico’s west coast is one of our favorites for its soothing mix of stunning beaches, fantastic whale watching, and some of the country’s best resorts. Nearby Islas Marietas National Park is also a must-see day trip if you and your mom are interested in dolphins, manta rays, and tropical fish. As for a home base? We love the Conrad Punta de Mita, whose unique programming includes agave spirits tastings, temazcal ceremonies, and private whale-watching tours by boat. Plus, with seven restaurants and bars, you won’t get tired of the food even if you never leave property.
Quebec City
An easy long weekend trip from the East Coast, this capital city of Quebec is the closest you can come to European vibes without crossing the Atlantic. Draws here include the dreamy cobblestoned streets in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old Quebec; Montmorency Falls, a waterfall that’s even higher than Niagara Falls; and a food scene that’s one of the most vibrant in the country. As for where to stay? There is nowhere more iconic than the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, situated on a promontory overlooking the St. Lawrence River. Plus, the hotel can organize plenty of activities for you and mom, including walking tours of the walled city of Old Quebec, wine tastings, and the Sagar Experience, wherein guests learn how to make forest sugar.
