Brunettes who like dark colors, unite! Barely a week after Selena Gomez wowed Cannes in a black and navy gown, Dakota Johnson stepped out in a corporate chic (dare we saw Dark Academia?) version of the combo, proving that the trick to nailing these two colors is to play with materials.

Wearing black and navy together has long been considered a fashion don’t, but like mixing metals, if it’s done with intention, no one really cares. Gomez made it work in an Oscar de la Renta gown that was matte navy with shiny silk black details, so the textures didn’t compete. And Johnson is employing the same trick. Or, well, the costume designer is. This is technically from the set of her upcoming movie The Materialists. Still a good outfit, though.

Johnson’s outfit is an oversized navy blue blazer (with subtle pinstripes) over a navy blue pinstriped skirt, with black leather accessories: knee-high boots and a matching bag. Her dark, sheer tights help bridge the gap between the two shades, and the silk button-down keeps her from looking like, well, a vampire. This is so Blair Waldorf-coded.

The blazer is from Aritzia, the boots from Anja and the bag from Hereu. As you can see here, Dakota Johnson has worn this costume on multiple shoot days, including with her hair down, so it seems like this will be a significant scene, and the go-to colors for her character. She was wearing black and blue in May and in April.

The Materialists is written and directed by Celine Song, who wrote and directed Past Lives (and is married to the writer of Challengers, fun fact). It co-stars Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, and the premise, per IMDb, is, “A matchmaker’s lucrative business gets complicated when she falls into a toxic love triangle that threatens her clients.”
