There are so many styles that have caught our attention this summer, from bubble hems to the crochet dress. And while we’d gladly wear any of them, we’re a bit surprised more love hasn’t been given to the ultimate summer dress: the tunic dress. After all, it’s the most comfortable, versatile, and fresh purchase one could make this time of year—and one you’ll wear non-stop from today through September.

Made almost always in linen—or at least, with very light and breathable fabrics—this hybrid between dress and beach coverup has been present since time immemorial in the summer looks of the best-dressed women we know.

Today, brands like Sézane and Banana Republic are selling tunic dresses that can be worn not only at the beach bar but also to the office, movies, or even a fancy event where the dress code calls for high heeled sandals and XL jewelry. It’s all in how you style it.

Speaking of, you can extend the life of yours into the fall by pairing it with a blazer and boots or layering with pants or a maxi skirt underneath.
