On Saturday, Zhang Ziyi chose a Gucci ensemble for her red carpet farewell at the Venice Film Festival’s closing ceremony, where she had served as a member of the prestigious jury.
I love how the dress and cape walk the fine line between a minimalist aesthetic and making a sartorial statement, with the elegance of the cape elevating the entire look.
However, I’m not entirely sold on the choice of handbag. For an event as glamorous as the Venice Film Festival, this Gucci Bamboo 1947 mini top handle bag felt a little too… pedestrian. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t an eyesore by any means, but it lacked the glitz and grandeur that the occasion demanded. A sleeker, more minimalist option would have been far more complementary, letting the focus remain on her dress and those stunning Chopard diamonds.
Speaking of accessories, let’s talk about those jewels for a moment. The Chopard diamonds she wore were, in my view, the only accessory this look really needed.
But, I know opinions might be divided on one other element of her look—her wet-look hair. Wet hair on the red carpet is always a topic of contention, and I can see why some might be turned off by it. I personally don’t mind the look, as it added a modern edge to the Old Hollywood glamour of her diamonds and cape.
One thing is for sure, during this festival she proved once again why she remains a style icon on the international stage—capable of making even the simplest looks feel like grand gestures.
