Jennifer Lopez made her grand return to the red carpet at the Sundance Film Festival premiere of her new film, Kiss of the Spider Woman, held at the Eccles Center Theatre on Sunday in Park City, Utah.
JLo’s Valdrin Sahiti gown – a black lace long-sleeve high-neck number with a crystal cobweb overlay – is likely to have many eyes rolling.
Yes, this dress is a prime example of method dressing – a trend where stars dress thematically in homage to their projects, but when it comes to cobweb dresses, Zendaya set the gold standard in 2021, gracing the Spider-Man: No Way Home LA premiere in a Valentino Haute Couture dress. Then last year, Dakota Johnson gave us cobweb realness in an Annie’s Ibiza design for the Vogue Carnival Ball while promoting Madame Web. She, however, opted not to wear anything too literal during the actual press tour, likely because even she realized it would be a bit too obvious.

Which brings us back to Jennifer. While the crystal cobweb embellishments could’ve been a dazzling nod to her film, the execution didn’t land for me. For starters, this dress feels dated – not in a cool, retro kind of way, but in a “did we dust this off from the early 80s?” way. Add to that the styling, including a hairstyle that somehow teleported me back to the early aughts, and the look starts to unravel faster than you can say, “Spider-Woman.”
Jennifer has always been a red carpet powerhouse, delivering looks that are jaw-dropping, and while this may have been on-theme, the overall vibe whispered, “last-minute Halloween costume.”

While I appreciate the effort to weave a narrative (pun intended), this was a huge miss for me. JLo’s red carpet appearances can occasionally leave us breathless, but this one was tangled up in too much nostalgia – and not the good kind. Let’s hope her next outing spins a much stronger web of sartorial success.
