The inventive brand, known for its colorful and free-spirited designs, launches a bold new accessory
In Partnership with KATE SPADE NEW YORK
Words by THE C MAGAZINE EDITORS
Kate Spade New York is marking its third decade with the launch of a new bag, the Dakota, complete with sculpted hardware that riffs on the unique geometry of the city’s architecture. The design nods to both the soaring buildings comprising Manhattan’s distinct skyline and the brand’s initials. The bag’s gold-toned clasp in various hues also references cheery house color codes including the distinctive green hue so synonymous with the line.
Naturally, the Dakota is as utilitarian as it is striking, which is fitting given the line’s heritage of clever designs and colorful palettes that first sparked an American accessories revolution 30 years ago. Such distinct visual language has expanded over the years, yet each new introduction complements house codes. True to form, the new rectangular leather purse with its short gold chain strap — and a clip-on leather option — is available in exuberant colors, including a lush green tone and a playfully saturated chartreuse hue in addition to white, tan, or black iterations.
Durability and practicality are also top of mind for the design team creating this new fall launch, as is timelessness, another quality that dates to the brand’s origins. The vibrant bags stand out as colorful antidotes to single-hued palettes but also blend seamlessly with modern looks, just as the line’s clothes, shoes, jewelry, and décor do. An ode to both New York City and urban adventures, the Dakota pays homage to Kate Spade New York’s roots while gracefully moving the ever-inventive line forward. As with each new launch, there’s joy and optimism — in spades. Dakota collection, $358-498, at Kate Spade New York, 3333 Bristol Street, South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa, 714-662-3956; southcoastplaza.com.
