Hello BoF Professionals, welcome to our latest members-only briefing: The Week Ahead. Think of it as your “cheat sheet” to what everyone will be talking about on Monday.
THE CHEAT SHEET
Ulta Beauty Is Kounting on the Kardashians

- Ulta began selling Kylie Cosmetics and Kim Kardashian’s KKW Fragrance in November
- Ulta shares are up 20 percent since announcing an exclusive deal with Kylie Jenner in August
- The beauty retailer reports third-quarter earnings on December 6
The Bottom Line: Kylie Cosmetics helps complete Ulta’s makeover into a purveyor of prestige products alongside mass brands. That will help the US retailer if it decides to challenge Sephora overseas.
Versace and Chanel Take Manhattan

- Versace’s first pre-fall show will be held in New York on December 2
- Chanel’s Métiers d’Art show, featuring its Paraffection ateliers, will take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on December 4
- Chanel recently re-opened a renovated Manhattan flagship; other luxury brands are making over NYC stores as well
The Bottom Line: With global growth seen slowing next year, it remains to be seen whether luxury customers will be as free-spending when the pre-fall collections hit stores next summer. Regardless, the US remains luxury’s biggest market (though that may change next year, according to BoF and McKinsey & Co.’s latest State of Fashion report).
Last Hurrah for the Old Victoria’s Secret?

- Victoria’s Secret’s annual fashion show airs on December 2
- Ratings for recent editions have fallen amid cultural backlash to “sexy” marketing
- The company appointed a new chief executive and promised to take “a fresh hard look at everything”
The Bottom Line: After years of dismissing cultural shifts as fads and fake news, Victoria’s Secret seems ready to acknowledge it has fallen behind the times. The brand can’t wait until next year’s fashion show to unveil its new look.
